What Is Dasha Balance Calculator?
Nobody is born at the very start of a Mahadasha. By the time of birth, the Moon has usually already travelled some way through its nakshatra, so part of the first period has already been used up. A Dasha Balance Calculator measures what remains, a figure printed on almost every traditional horoscope as "balance of dasha at birth".
This one figure anchors the whole timeline. If it is off by a few months, every later Mahadasha and Antardasha date moves by the same amount, so a precise balance is the base for accurate dasha timing.
Dasha Balance Calculator Formula
Dasha Balance = ((13°20′ − Moon's Arc Travelled in Nakshatra) ÷ 13°20′) × Nakshatra Lord's Years The balance formula measures how much of the birth nakshatra the Moon still had left to cover and applies that fraction to the nakshatra lord's full Mahadasha length. A Moon near the start of its nakshatra leaves almost the entire period ahead, while a Moon near the end leaves only a small remainder.

How the Dasha Balance Calculator Works
The calculator works out how far the Moon had travelled through its birth nakshatra, subtracts that from the nakshatra's full span of 13°20′, and applies the unused fraction to the nakshatra lord's Mahadasha years. The result is the balance of dasha at birth.

Worked Example
Rohini runs from 10°00′ to 23°20′ Taurus and is ruled by the Moon (10 years). A Moon at 16°40′ Taurus has covered 6°40′, exactly half of the nakshatra, so the balance at birth is 0.5 × 10 = 5 years of Moon Mahadasha. Mars Mahadasha then begins on your fifth birthday.
What Affects the Result
- Birth time: a one-hour error moves the Moon about 0.5° and can change the balance by several months
- Ayanamsa choice (Lahiri, Raman, KP) shifts the Moon's sidereal degree slightly
- Nakshatra boundaries: near a boundary, a small error can change the starting Mahadasha lord itself

What is balance of dasha at birth?
It is the unused portion of the Mahadasha you were born into. Because the Moon had already covered part of its nakshatra at birth, only the remainder of that planet's period is left to run.
How do I calculate dasha balance manually?
Find the Moon's degree within its nakshatra, subtract it from 13°20′, divide by 13°20′ and multiply by the nakshatra lord's Vimshottari years. Then convert the decimal into years, months and days.
How accurate is the dasha balance calculation?
It is only as accurate as your birth time. An error of 15 minutes can move the balance by a few weeks, and an error of an hour by several months.
Why does my dasha balance differ between two horoscopes?
The two horoscopes most likely used different ayanamsas, birth times or year-length conventions. Check those three settings first.
What happens after the dasha balance ends?
The next planet in the Vimshottari order begins its full Mahadasha. After a Venus balance, for example, the Sun Mahadasha runs for its complete 6 years.
