A Vimshottari Dasha Calculator lays out the full sequence of planetary periods described by Sage Parashara, running in the fixed order Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury. Mahadasha Sequence = Birth Nakshatra Lord → next lords in fixed order, each lasting its assigned years (total 120) The Vimshottari formula starts the cycle with the lord of your birth nakshatra and then moves through the remaining eight planets in their fixed order, giving each one its traditional share of the 120 years. Only the first period is shortened, by the portion of the nakshatra the Moon had already crossed at birth, so every later date follows from that single starting point.

Vimshottari Dasha Calculator FAQ
Why is the Vimshottari cycle exactly 120 years long?
Classical texts treat 120 years as the full human lifespan (Purna Ayu). The nine planetary periods are sized so that together they add up to exactly that span.
Does everyone go through all nine Vimshottari Mahadashas?
Not usually. Because the cycle begins partway through one period and runs for 120 years, most people experience six or seven Mahadashas in a typical lifetime.
Why does my first Mahadasha look shorter than the standard length?
The first period is a balance: only the unused part of your birth nakshatra is counted. Every Mahadasha after it runs for its full traditional length.
Is Vimshottari Dasha more reliable than other dasha systems?
It is the most widely used system and applies to almost every chart. Other systems such as Yogini or Ashtottari are generally used alongside it for confirmation rather than as replacements.
